Desert Squirrels Love Spying from Little Manholes
Pet shops sell countless models of small rodent houses, most of which have standard side entrances. But ground squirrels (or sand squirrels, scientifically Octodon degus) are not doggies. Let’s use some imagination and creativity here: For example, a home-made shallow mezzanine had changed the life experience for a group of young degus. Originally, it was intended as a cage-splitting separator level with a little maze in it, for them to play there. Instead, the inventive rascals lined the inside with paper tissues and occupied the space for living… They enjoy peeking out of the horizontal holes, and their tails swiftly disappear in there when they hear a helicopter or the neighbours talking behind the front door.
Their previous classical little house was left completely abandoned. Perhaps other sweethearts might appreciate the delights of natural den orientation, too: such as hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils. (Attribution and additional inspiring pictures: www.okram.fr)
